‘Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.’ Psalm 119:105

Welcome to Illuminus, an opinion blog which brings you a less objectionable form of Christian thought.

I’ll let that sink in for a second. Already I can assume two reactions from anyone who reads that statement, the first being “less objectionable?! How offensive is that?!” and the second being “Less objectionable? Yeah, right”. It’s to reconcile these two different schools of thought on Christianity (especially in the media) that I created Illuminus.

Christianity is the largest and most organized religion in the world (discounting the various sects) and yet, or perhaps because of this, a large part of the world views us as either extremely judgmental and operating under a our-way-or-the-highway philosophy or as a passing curiosity – people who still believe in the “flying spaghetti monster” solution to human existence.

Are we to blame, just a little bit, for this sort of reaction? While the church has repeatedly improved their approach to the changes that new media (particularly the internet) has brought about they are still tarred by corruption and the acts of the extreme minority in the eyes of the world.

But surely when we retreat back from the “greater” church ideas and turn to individual groups within communities Christians have an accepted place? We do preach “peace and love” after all. I recently began University while operating under this assumption and was shocked when I was disabused as to it. Not only were Christians looked at with no little disdain by the ironically self-righteous Athiests who made up the majority of the population on campus, far more confronting were those Christians who took it on themselves to argue logical or literary ideas solely from a Christian (and a we-are-always-right) paradigm.

I find these over zealous and often boorish Christians with a closed mind and an open mouth the biggest problem the Church faces in the world at the moment because they are actively creating a bad reputation for Christians in small communities.

So Illuminus was created, an open Christian blog where judgment and antagonism are left at the door. This is a free place to discuss all kinds of religious thought without being shouted down for it. I hope this will become an online hub for free Christian thought and news.
